The "carpet bombing" we have in game isn't far off from what the Royal Navy actually did, which has been called "glide bombing" among other things.
To be fair I probably should have worded the OP differently but hey it's out there now. (beyond not going too deep into it and confusing people) I could also make the point that many of the gameplay mechanics are not realistic as well.īesides all that it was just a random late-night idea, haven't put too much thought into it other than "hey this would be cool." and then "Nah probably not." we could probably come up with some viable ways for this to work but really I don't have enough brainpower left in me at this time of night. Random thought for the day, back to destroyers for now.Ĭarpet bombing generally wasn't done by the kind of naval bombers we see on in-game CVs but we have that in the game as well which is why I didn't mention the planes themselves. If you think a torpedo from a plane is hard to dodge try dodging a bomb skipping over the water at your broadside multiple times faster. Personally I feel like it may simply be too effective (Edit: This is assuming that it would be done in a more 'Arcade like' style for ease of use) to be placed in the game without serious balance changes. I thought about it for a while and while it's an interesting idea. Interesting stuff, I fully recommend looking it up if you have time on your hands. I am of course dumbing it down for the sake of anyone reading this being able to understand at least the basics of what I'm talking about. If you are not familiar with this tactic it's essentially a bomber approaching at very low altitude and skipping a bomb (or bombs) that had a time-delayed fuze at the side of an enemy ship, or below the enemy ship and detonate.
I was just speaking to another tester and they brought up depth charges for CVs which made me think of a very interesting topic: skip bombing.
